Project Title: | Non-invasive Assessment of Environmental Stress and its Effect on Reproductive Status in Indian Wild Tiger Populations |
Abstract of Project : | |
Increasing levels of human intervention have resulted in significant population decline of tigers globally. While habitat/prey depletion and hunting are major concerns, the indirect effects of such disturbances on the remaining tiger populations have not received any attention. I plan to combine field and laboratory-based approaches to non-invasively measure hormone metabolites as correlates of nutritional/psychological stress and reproductive status of wild Indian tigers living in habitats with varied disturbance levels. Such research will aid in defining the role of environmental disturbance on tiger populations, which is critical for effective conservation efforts. |
